Lawmaker proposes New Weight Standards

A New York Lawmaker, Jose Rivera, is seeking to create a law that would implement weight standards for models under the age of 18. The idea spawns off the recent death of the Brazilian model Ana Carolina Reston. At the time of her death she weighed an astounding 88 pounds. The new laws target young girls in hopes of dismissing the thought of any eating disorder.

A recent study by the British Medical Association links the "abnormally thin" models to disorders. With constant media putting so much emphasis on being skinny, it is time to protect the children from the subliminal dangers.

The proposal would restrict models from working that do not meet the weight restrictions or that are under 18.5 body mass index. Recent agreements have already been made. Madrid Fashion Week banned all models that reported a body mass less than 18. Also, the Italian fashion industry have agreed not to hire any models younger than 16 and undergo medical screenings to prove that they are indeed healthy.

Why is the media so obsessed with being thin? Post on my blog your ideas.
Stay tuned to see what happens to this proposal.
